Travel Bucket List

How a couple can combine their Travel Bucket lists and choose

My husband and I got married 3 years ago and each of us had our own travel bucket list. We both love traveling and have a lot of common interests, such as visiting historic sites, museums, scenic views, and experiencing the best of a destination. We have two different types of trips we take. One is where we go all out and tour every site at our destination, and the other is just to chill and reconnect and recharge. I will talk about those later, because for now I want to talk about how we came up with our bucket list to help us decide where we would travel with the time left to us.

As a widow, it is important to me to live each day to the fullest, and I realize that I or one of my loved ones may not be here tomorrow. My husband and I also realize that we are not getting younger. Although we both work out and try to take care of ourselves, we do realize we have a limited window of travel time left (not a fun thought, but it’s real and a part of life!). Hence, the travel bucket list. It is important to us to get to as many of these destinations as our lifestyle and real life will allow.

My husband came up with a great excel worksheet that we each filled out. According to his assignment of scores, we should probably go to the lower ranked destinations first, as they are the most difficult. His spreadsheet takes in to account the following:

So obviously, we aren’t necessarily following this in order but it was a great starting point for us to look at each other’s priorities and dreams. Because travel is about dreams, too, isn’t it? This was a great exercise for us to see where each of us wanted to go the most. Hubby came up with his, this one is mine, and then we compared and it helps us to choose where to go next.

Using this chart, my choice this summer for our anniversary was Scotland. He gets next year, which is also his 50th Birthday, and he is choosing a Greek Islands Cruise. Of course we are allowed to tweak and change destinations and priorities, and have to take in to account budget/vacation time. But this is a great way to actually focus and picture these travel dreams.

Try it and see if it helps you focus and prioritize your travel bucket list, too! Please let me know what you think.

    1. Thank you! Of course, this list always seems to change with time, too. But it’s a great place to start and get my inspiration. Thank you for being my first commenter, by the way!
